Does the picture file name start from IMG_0001.JPG?
Jul 28, 2004
Hi,
I just receive my camera bought from ebay. When I try it, I find that my first picture is IMG_1703.JPG. My last digital camera has the file name starts from 0001. I am wondering if the seller gives me a used camera while it is declared as brand new.
Can you guys tell me if it start from 0001?
Thanks in advance.

No, this is a common thread in this forum with the DR starting or changing file numbers. Try this link to reset to specific no
and a previous link on the subject

Yep! Brand new it should be 0001

But if it's 0001 it doesn't mean it's brand new.
Anyway, if the cf card used with the camera wasn't fresh formatted, and contained a picture labeled img_1702.jpg, the camera, even a new one, would automatically increment the file counter to img_1703.jpg.

Thanks for your link. I even don't know what keywords to search.
I do take my CF to a camera store to try the camera before I buy it and the pictures are still in that CF. I will delete them all to try.

k,
I would expect that a brand new camera, never used outside the factory, would have the first image as \100CANON\IMG_0001.*
Often those bought "over the counter" will show evidence of having been fired a few times in demonstration.
Best regards,
Doug

Re: How can I check if the camera is new or used?
In reply to Doug Kerr • Jul 28, 2004
My first shoot is in 217CANON\IMG_1703.JPG
Does it mean it is used a lot? Is it possible a CF with IMG_1700.JPG be used in the camera and change the counter?
I think using the file number to check if a camera is new or not is not reliable. How can I check if the camera is new? Everything in the box look like new, but they can replace the camera in a new box by a used one.
Thanks.
