Katy Perry leaves American Idol - Luke Bryan says it's not a "huge shock"
In a recent interview, Luke Bryan revealed that he had a sense Katy Perry might be departing from American Idol this year.
During a recent episode of the popular syndicated radio show Taste of Country Nights, Bryan mentioned, “I had heard some rumors that she was considering it, so it wasn’t a complete surprise.”
Reflecting on Perry's announcement of her departure from Idol on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year, Bryan remarked, “I think maybe she got caught up in the moment with Kimmel and spontaneously made the announcement.”
Looking back on their time working together, the “Play It Again” singer expressed, “It's been a great experience working alongside Katy. We've developed a strong friendship over the years. I mean, I've been around since before her daughter was born, and now her daughter is 3 or 4 years old.”
He continued, “Observing her journey as a mother throughout this process has been really enjoyable.”
Bryan also mentioned that although they won't be working together on Idol anymore, he hopes to maintain their friendship. “She knows she can always reach out to me, regardless of what she decides to pursue next,” he added.
Perry joined American Idol in 2018 for season 16, initially appearing as a guest judge during season nine.
In February, Perry announced that the current 22nd season of American Idol would likely be her last, citing her busy schedule with the release of her upcoming album. “I think this might be my final season on Idol,” Perry stated. “I adore Idol; it has connected me with the heart of America, but I feel the need to march to the beat of my own drum.”
When questioned by Kimmel about Bryan and fellow judge Lionel Richie's reactions to her departure, Perry teased, “Well, they'll find out tonight.”
“They have an inkling,” she chuckled. “I've been spending quite a bit of time in the studio, so they probably guessed something was brewing.”
