America's Favorite Singing Cowboy

Known as America's Favorite Singing Cowboy, Gene Autry's career spanned some 70 years in the entertainment industry. He became famous in radio, records, film, television, and live tour performances including rodeo. From the late 1920s through the early 1950s, Gene Autry recorded and wrote hundreds of songs; he was the most successful singing cowboy, appearing in 93 movies and starring in 91 episodes of his television series. Gene Autry was ranked among the most celebrated film stars, and for years was considered to be the most popular Western film actor. In his later years, Gene Autry owned television and radio stations on the West Coast and was the original owner of the Angels Major League Baseball team in Anaheim, California.

This Wednesday, October 2nd is the anniversary of Gene Autry's passing and to commemorate his legacy our YouTube Clip of the Week is his signature song, "Back in the Saddle Again." The song was so popular for Gene that it became the theme song of his weekly radio show and also was the title of his 1941 film Back in the Saddle. Gene Autry died at his home in Studio City, California on October 2, 1998 due to complications from cancer. He was 91 years old. Gene is buried at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. Jackie and Gene Autry Collection at the Autry Museum Store

The Autry's homes in Los Angeles and the Desert were decorated with contemporary Western art collected by Jackie and Gene over the years. Several pieces from their collection are now for sale and can be viewed in person at the Autry Museum Store.

Sale of the artwork from the Jackie and Gene Autry Collection will benefit the Autry Museum of the American West.

The National Recording Registry is a list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States." The registry was established by the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, which created the National Recording Preservation Board, whose members are appointed by the Librarian of Congress.
